Western-Style Hamburger

These open-faced burgers may not be low in calories, but man, are they flavorful! And, of course, the addition of Café Campesino coffee to the recipe makes the dish.

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large purple onion, peeled and finely minced
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely minced
  • 1 cup chili sauce
  • 1 tablespoon jalapeno relish
  • 1/2 cup prepared Café Campesino coffee
  • 1 additional tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1-1/2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 3 hamburger buns, halved and toasted
  • 1 cup grated sharp Cheddar cheese

Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a medium skillet. Sauté onion and garlic in oil over low heat until soft but not brown. Add chili sauce and jalapeno relish. Bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer 5 minutes. Stir in coffee. Keep on low heat 5 to 10 minutes but do not boil after adding coffee. Remove from heat. Keep warm. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet. Shape meat into 6 thick patties. Brown in oil over high heat. Turn patties; lower heat. Cook 5 to 10 minutes. Place on toasted buns. Cover with hot sauce and top with grated cheese. Serve immediately. Makes 6 servings.
