For generations, small-scale farmers in Sumatra’s Aceh region sold their coffee cherries to middlemen who kept most of the value. In 2006, a group of Gayonese farmers founded Permata Gayo to change that — giving farmers more choice and control over the pricing and distribution of their own coffee. Nearly two decades later, that mission has grown into a cooperative of 2,963 farmers across 36 affiliated villages, democratically elected by delegate. Grown at 1,200–1,600 meters in the tropical highlands, our Sumatra Viennese carries the region’s signature full, syrupy body, medium acidity, and notes of green pepper, dark walnut, leather, and red fruits.
