Peru – Pangoa
Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Pangoa was founded in 1977 in the San Martin de Pangoa region of Peru’s central Amazon, initially by just 50 farmers, but quickly grew to over 1,700 members before being hit hard by political violence during the 1980s—a period known as El Periodo del Terrorismo—which forced many to flee. Today, the cooperative has recovered and now consists of 700 small-scale farmers, committed to making a positive economic and environmental impact on their community. Pangoa operates at elevations of 1,000 to 2,000 meters, producing Arabica varietals such as Bourbon, Typica, Caturra, and Pache, and is certified both organic and Fair Trade.
Pangoa reinvests 3% of all sales into organizational and community development, funding initiatives like educational loans, health funds, women’s development and health programs, tree renovation, and member death benefits. The cooperative has expanded its coffee production capabilities with improved processing facilities and has diversified member income through cocoa, honey, local coffee roasting, and ecotourism. Pangoa’s coffees are known for medium acidity and body, with flavor notes of cocoa, almond, and berries.
