Founded in 1995 by Aurora Izquierdo, the first Arhuaca woman from the Yewrwa community to earn a university degree, ASOANEI (Anei) is a cooperative of over 700 indigenous Arhuacos, Cogis, Güigüas, Kankuamo, and campesino farmers in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Serranía del Perijá. Using organic coffee as a tool, Anei promotes cultural preservation and economic autonomy through eco-sustainable programs that strengthen indigenous governance, support local economies via community shops, and reclaim social, economic, and cultural rights. Their high-quality, fair-trade coffee, grown in harmony with Mother Earth, boasts a smooth, sweet, and lightly acidic profile with a creamy body and smoky aftertaste when roasted darker. Rooted in their role as humanity’s “elder brothers,” Anei’s farmers steward the environment, making offerings to sacred sites to maintain universal balance, viewing climate change as a disruption caused by the “younger brothers” (the rest of the world).
